Our team represented Michael Janson, a private client, who inherited the copyright to a series of novels written by his grandfather about Valaam Church. The Valaam Church itself was publishing these novels without any prior consent from the right holder further to a recommendation of the Publishing Council of the Russian Orthodox Church. The matter involves the historic legislation of three jurisdictions, issues pertaining to retroactive force under the Berne Convention and issues pertaining to Soviet legislation on copyright.
